German Retail Sales Fall for Second Straight Month
The latest decline mirrored a revised 0.3% monthly drop recorded in March, according to calendar- and seasonally adjusted figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). On an annual basis, retail sales were equally subdued, slipping 0.3% compared with April 2025.
The primary culprit behind April's contraction was a sharp pullback in gas station sales, which Destatis attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. The category — which encompasses convenience store purchases made at gas stations — plunged 4% month-on-month and tumbled 10.4% against the same period last year.
Not all segments deteriorated, however. Food sector sales bucked the broader trend, climbing 3.2% from March, though they edged marginally lower by 0.1% on an annual basis.
The non-food sector offered little relief, contracting 2.2% on a monthly basis and slipping 0.2% compared with April 2025.
Online and mail-order sales posted a steep 4.7% monthly decline, though the channel managed to stay 0.4% ahead of its year-ago level — one of the few bright spots in an otherwise subdued retail landscape.
