Hidden Surveillance Device at German Rail Hub Prompts Sabotage Probe

(MENAFN) German prosecutors have opened an espionage investigation after the discovery of a concealed camera at a major rail facility in western Germany used for military transport linked to support operations for Ukraine.

According to public broadcasters WDR and NDR, authorities have identified a suspect believed to be a Lithuanian national who may have installed the device at Minden train station. The location is considered strategically important, serving as a loading point for German and British forces and a logistical node connected to NATO’s eastern operations.

Investigators reportedly carried out a search of a residence in Detmold on Tuesday morning as part of the inquiry. Officials suspect the hidden camera was used to monitor military rail movements, with concerns that it could have been part of preparations for sabotage activities.

The device was discovered in September after an employee of Germany’s national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, noticed it during routine activity. Reports describe the equipment as a compact black camera mounted on a pole approximately five meters high and partially disguised with a fake Deutsche Bahn label.

Security sources cited in reports said the device was equipped with features including a solar power source, a foreign SIM card enabling live data transmission, night vision capability, and onboard storage for recordings. It was reportedly directed at a rail yard used for assembling military transport trains.

Authorities have not yet determined who may have commissioned the installation of the device. However, investigators are reportedly exploring the possibility of involvement by foreign intelligence services, with some assessments pointing to potential links to Russian operations.

German domestic intelligence services have previously warned that foreign espionage efforts increasingly rely not only on trained operatives but also on recruited individuals without formal intelligence backgrounds who may be used for surveillance or sabotage-related tasks.
