Rubio Skips Meeting on Ukraine at Munich Security Conference

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio unexpectedly skipped a Ukraine-focused meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, reports indicate, canceling “at the last minute.”

The Berlin Format gathering on Friday included Kiev’s European supporters—such as French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and the heads of the European Commission, European Council, and NATO—who were attempting to influence the US-led negotiation process toward what they consider a “just peace deal.”

An unnamed European official described the cancellation, officially attributed to “scheduling conflicts,” as “insane.” Another source told reporters that without Rubio, the meeting “lacked substance.”

Rubio is scheduled to speak at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday morning and is expected to discuss Russia-Ukraine in multiple side meetings, according to US officials.

The US diplomat has previously missed key gatherings, including a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in December, with no reason provided. Similarly, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth did not attend a recent defense minister meeting at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
